The secret to selling books is the picture. The picture will be noticed before any title or description. I use a scanner. If you have several books you might need a camera.. Sometimes both a scanner and a camera are needed for that special book. You can use a film camera and scan the resulting photo.
The next important thing is the title and the subtitle. I use both. Get as much information on the first line as possible. Supplement that information with the subtitle.
Never steal anyone's picture's. Your listing will be canceled. Don't try to copy a picture. The outcome is usually a disaster. You have still violated the rules.
Ask how would you look this book up if you were browsing on EBay. Suppose you are selling a biography. The title is MY LIFE. If people are looking for a biography on specific celebrity they probably will not look under that title..Suppose you put the celebrities name as the title and the words MY LIFE on the subtitle. You can also add things like Includes Photo's.
As for description, use one that is not too long. Be specific as to how much you charge for shipping. Specify if you ship to other countries.. I recommend using paypal as well as money orders or cashiers checks in the USA. Most people will use paypal. Always use paypal for overseas transactions. Be specific as to how long you will wait for payment..Don't be afraid to send duplicate invoices. Your customer may have forgotten that they placed a bid on your item.
Try to sell similar books. Become known for your line. Be nice to your customers and email them when their purchase is mailed. Be prompt in mailing. It can really make a difference. Take care to use a good envelope.
One thing might save you much anguish. Some sellers merely shop around ebay and steal each other's images. Most scanners have a water marking program. Water mark all your photos with your user ID. For extra protection you might try a program like auctiva which has some simple security that will stop the average seller from stealing your photo. There are programs you can add to stop photo theft. Be sure to have a noticeable watermark usually your ebay ID across the front of the book the first time you run the ad. Unfortunately there are ways to crop your book to remove your user ID if it isn't in the center. There are many sites to add a watermark. Many thieves will take your unmarked photo and watermark it with their ID. Then you need to report to security and resolution the theft. You need to report it every time. Keep good records in case you should ever need a lawyer. In my case I only had a problem with one seller. Be sure to discuss it on ebay discussion groups without dropping the thiefs's name. Sooner or later she or he will steal a photo from another seller and you will have someone to help you should this ever go to a legal level.
