Piston Selection Guide
We have had a lot of customers emailing us lately about piston selection and which would be best for them, so we are putting together a guide to selecting the right pistons for your engine. We carry several different kinds of pistons, and it can all get a little overwhelming to take in at once when its time to purchase, so here are some steps to take before shopping around.
-
Every Piston Set we sell comes with Pistons, Wrist Pins, Piston Rings, and Locks

Determine Power Goals: The first, and most important deciding factor when chosing a piston is the give and take relationship between strength and price. It helps to have a number in mind of how much power you are planning to make before you go to purchase pistons. Obviously, the more power you need a piston to hold, the more expensive it will cost, so its important that you have a number in mind before you decide. Once you have a number in mind, then you can determine which brand of pistons will be suitable to hold up to your goals. Below I will outline the 3 most popular piston sets we sell in order of least strength to most strength.
SRP Pistons: (Made by JE for B-Series Honda Applications) are our lowest rated piston in terms of ultimate strength. We usually reccomend these pistons to all-motor customers building high compression, lightweight bottom ends. We usually do not reccomend these to customers building turbo engines.
Wiseco Pistons: are the next highest rated piston we carry after SRP, these are an excellent entry level street and strip piston for forced induction setups that will make a respectable amount of power. We often reccomend these to customers building street cars that will see enthusiastic driving in the 400hp-500hp range
CP Pistons: are what we reccomend for customers who are looking to reliably make big power, however these are a safe choice for a reliable moderately powered street engine as well. These pistons are excellently designed and are what we all use on our personal cars, and shop race cars. We havent been able to make one fail yet and have made big horsepower on them for years. CP is the brand we trust.
3.) Determine Compression Ratio
Each of our piston auctions have a list of part numbers and compression ratios. Once you know how much power you are going for, you will have to determine what compression pistons will best accomodate your goals. The general rule of thumb is High compression for all-motor NA applications and Low Compression for Turbo/Supercharged applications.
- Turbo / Supercharged Applications: Popular Compression ratios for Turbo or Supercharged Applications range from 8.0:1 to 9.5:1 The higher the compression goes, the better your tune would have to be to keep the engine safe from detonation. A higher compression ratio will make a more resonsive engine off boost, while a lower compression ratio will make the car slightly more sluggish off boost. In the end, lower compression is safer, higher compression will make more power if you have a tuner that knows what they are doing.
- All Motor Applications: Popular Compression ratios for All Motor n/a cars range from 9.5:1 and up. Again, a higher compression ratio will make a more responsive and powereful engine but is also more prone to detonation issues if the tune is not accurate. Also, higher octane gas is usually required when going to higher compression pistons to deter detonation.
4.) Determine Bore Size
After you have determined your power goal and optimum compression ratio, its time to figure out what size diameter piston you need. The pistons we sell come in Standard Bore, .020" (0.5mm) oversized, or .040" (1.0mm) oversized. (With the exception of some other applications that come with even larger oversized bores). Most people take their engine to a machine shop to get checked before installing pistons. The machinist that inspects the block will determine if the cylinder walls have been worn or damaged.
- If they are in good shape, you should go with Standard Bore Pistons.
- If it is determined that the cylinder walls have been damaged, the block will be bored out to remove the imperfections on the surface of the cylinderwall. The amount removed will either be 0.5mm or 1.0mm, that is how you will know what size diameter pistons to get.
5.) Now You're Ready To Purchase!
Once you have completed these steps, you are prepared with the required knowledge to confidently purchase the correct pistons for your application. If you are still unsure, or have additional questions or concerns, feel free to email us through ebay or Call us Directly at the Shop at 1(407)-348-2300.
