Ceramic molds are the major expense in ceramics and ceramic shops. Ceramic molds are made of plaster of paris, and just like any plaster they do tend to warp over time. Tired of dealing with leaking molds that take valuable time away from running the store? Reseat your molds to save time in pouring and cleaning greenware and to prolong the life of your ceramic molds. First soak all sides of the mold in a large bin filled with clean water. Allow mold to soak at least 20 minutes. Remove from water and wipe over all surfaces with a smooth sponge. Replace the mold parts back together and place on a concrete surface, or any surface that is not pourous, and place a heavy object such as a brick or even other molds on top of the mold. Leave the mold this way for at least 3 days before removing the heavy object from the mold. Place in the sun to dry for a couple of days, until the mold no longer feels damp to the touch. You are then ready to pour the mold again, and those wide seams will definately have shrunk. Take care to make sure you have cleaned the mold throughly after removing it from the water, or whatever residue you left on the mold will also be a part of the mold.
