The purpose of the cold water is to stop any possible
color bleeding from continuing..it also rinses the cards and
freezes up any tiny glue specks remaining on the backs

They just need a quick dip into the cold water..
gently grap them again and "flip" them onto the newspapers
about 2 or 3 small cards or one large card to each page of newspaper

I also suggested using the smaller newspapers as I have found
they do not transfer any of their ink like larger newspapers do,
and they absorb water quickly

Allow the cards to remain on the newspaper for
several minutes then flip them onto new sheets of newspaper.
Keep doing this until water does not visibly show on the papers
Now it is time to layer the cards between the heavy books
to continue drying them and to ensure they will dry perfectly flat

You will start with a large flat book for the base..
place a clear protective sheet on top of the book to protect the book
from any water or ink coming from the newspaper or cards.
On top of the clear sheet, place 3 or four sheets of the newspaper,
then place 2-3 semi-dry cards on top of the newspapers..
(do not stack cards on top of each other!)
then place a few more sheets of newspaper on top of the cards
creating a layered effect in which the cards are BETWEEN
the sheets of dry newspaper.
Follow this by placing another protective clear sheet down
and then finish with several heavy books on top of everything

Let this sit for an hour or so then take it all apart
checking that the cards are staying flat..
the newspapers will be slightly damp to wet .
Rebuild the books and cards in the same way using
fresh newspapers and let them sit for several hours
or until the next day.
Then change-check again.
Use your judgement as to when the cards are
completely dry and remaining flat
prior to placing back into your collection

My practice cards came out fine with just some aging on the back..
no scrapbook glue or paper remained, however one of the Valentines had
been folded, and the fold gave out leaving me with two parts to the card..
So out of my five practice cards..one didn't make it and four are in
much better condition to add to my collection

This procedure works on all kinds of cards
including trade cards, postcards, collectible cards, folded cards..
scrapbook gift tags, and small pieces of ephemera
It also works with decorated, folded cards
that have glitter-ribbons-bows, etc. EXCEPT
the procedure is slightly different

I have been asked if this works on baseball-football
or gum cards and I honestly have not had any
of these to try, so please try at your own risk,
I would imagine they would come out well
because of their smaller size.
Glossy-real photo-or gel coated cards are risky!
However, some real photos have come out just fine for me
HOT water-
FAST removal of glue-
COLD water rinse-
QUICK drying and pressing -
CHANGING the papers very frequently
Those are the "tricks" you have to learn
and "timing" is everything
This process also eliminates many odors
and you may wish to try scented dish soap
although I use antibacterial to remove mold spores or dust
Practice alot before attempting any of your favorites and
remember if it is a very valuable card, it is going to be risky at best.

If the card has alot of red coloring..ink writing
glitter..stamps or other added markings-decorations,
you will have to hold the card above the water, and immerse only
that part of the card affected by glue or attached scrapbook paper..
then find a way to flatten that area back out while protecting the
remaining good parts of the card from damage while drying-pressing
The faster you can get that glue and scrapbook paper
to slide from the card, the better chance the card has
in coming out in great shape..
so don't leave the process to go stir your beef stew!!!!
