I had heard recently that the U.S. is preparing for a swine flu outbreak this fall, but had no idea that it had hit college campuses already.
No sooner had I helped my daughter move back to college, when a few days later, she called home to let me know she was sick. She visited the campus doctor who told her she had the flu, most likely swine flu, although the test hasn't been confirmed yet. Her university administration has since issued alerts to all students and parents that they expect 20% of the student population to come down with swine flu this semester. Apparently, this H1N1 influenza virus is expected to hit the under-25 crowd the hardest.
Here's a quick list of items (learned from very recent experience) that a student should have on hand to help them during a swine flu illness:
1. Your medical insurance card or enough cash on hand to visit an off-campus clinic if necessary.
2. A thermometer.
3. A fever reducer.
4. Lip balm.
5. Email addresses of all your professors in case you need to let them know you have the swine flu and cannot attend classes for a few days.
6. A blanket. Even it is still warm in many parts of the country, if the chills set in, you'll want to wrap yourself in one until your Tylenol kicks in.
7. Lots of clear beverages. Even if you have to drink your 7 Up warm, you'll want to keep yourself hydrated.
8. Canned chicken noodle soup and other non-perishables. Many universities do not want students with swine flu in the dining halls. Therefore, you might need to be able to feed yourself in your dorm room for a few days.
9. Your ipod, your laptop, some books. You'll probably need to take it easy for a few days after the flu until you regain your strength and energy. You'll need to entertain yourself.
10. Hand sanitizer and maybe even a face mask.
This is a short list, but I hope it helps a student or two get through this swine flu pandemic.
P.S. My daughter is on the mend and will resume classes in a few days.
