Introduction
Making new friends is a fun and profitable pursuit no matter where you are, but finding friends among the four million members of the Second Life virtual world can be especially rewarding. Since the entire point of Second Life is to inspire fun and creativity on a worldwide basis, the opportunities to meet new people are almost infinite. Here are some tips to help you.
Step One
Become a member of Second Life. Visit the home page (see the Resources section below) and perform the Second Life download. Click the icon that appears on your desktop to enter the Second Life site.
Step Two
Click "Connect" to "teleport" to a location within the site. If this is not your first trip, you will probably find yourself at the place where you were before you signed off last time.
Step Three
Notice the other avatars exploring your location. Their screen names appear above their heads. Choose someone you'd like to talk with.
Step Four
Click the "Chat" button to begin a conversation. Address one person by name, or simply type a question or comment. If you are new to Second Life, think of something you would like to know more about, such as commerce, events or creating a world. Other members are happy to share their knowledge.
Step Five
Find out about parties and events from other members or from the "Events" list on the drop-down menu. Attending an event such as a class or a group creative project is just as good a way to meet new people in the virtual world as it is in real life.
Step Six
Program your avatar to respond to others with friendly facial expressions and gestures. Use a tutorial, or ask others to find out how to do this (see Resources below).
Step Seven
Do things with your friends. Show up at the same locations. Attend events. Talk. Since the Second Life world is international, you never know how you may be enriched or enrich others.
Overall Tips & Warnings
As in the blogging world, you can put people on a special "Friendship" list to stay in contact with them. As you chat, you may see a dialog box that reads, "So-and-So Offers You Friendship," with a choice to accept or not.
Approach people as you would in the real world, politely and sincerely. Second Life has strict rules about harassment, disrupting other avatars' activities or otherwise making a nuisance of yourself. Review the "Community Standards" to learn more (see Resources below).
