Calculating Yardage for Slipcovers - MADE EASY
Step 1
In order to get an accurate measurement, remove any cushions or existing covers from the furniture.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step 2
From top to bottom, you will measure the length of each section of the piece of furniture, from top to bottom. Measure the outside back, inside back, seat, front, inside arms and outside arms.
For box-shaped chairs and couches, remember to include the top back and the top of the arms in your measurements.

--or--
Each Section:
Cushion 1 ___________ add 2 Inches = __________
Cushion 2 ___________ add 2 Inches = __________
Cushion 3 ___________ add 2 Inches = __________
Cushion 4 ___________ add 2 Inches = __________
Other ___________ add 2 Inches = __________ (Add any pillows you want to match)
Other ___________ add 2 Inches = __________
Outside Back ___________ add 2 Inches = __________
add 5 inches = __________ (To tuck between the inside back
and the seat)

Inside Arms ___________ add 2 Inches = __________
Outside Arms ___________ add 2 Inches = __________
If furniture is box shaped, also measure the top back and the top of the arms in your measurement.
Top Back ________ add 2 Inches = __________

For skirt, measure distance from bottom edge of piece to the floor
Skirt Length _______ add 2 Inches = __________
Measure around
the bottom of the
piece of furniture ________ add 2 Inches = __________
for Pleats Multiply by 2 X2
= __________
for Gathers Multiply by 3 X3
= __________
TOTAL OF ALL LENGTHS: __________
Divide by 36 (for total yardardage) /36
= __________
Add 2 Yards for stripes
or repeat patterns that

___________
Approximate Yardage
Needed to make a
slipcover for this piece ___________
For wide pieces of furniture
(Step 3 multiply by number
of sections based upon
width of chosen fabric) __________
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step 3 – Measuring for a Sofa, Couch or Loveseat
Measure the piece as for a chair, but note that home decorator fabrics are usually not wide enough to completely cover these longer pieces of furniture, so the slipcover will have to be made up of two or three sections. Determine the total yardage needed by multiplying the total yardage by the number of sections.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step 4
Remember to measure all of the cushions that will be covered as well and to add this yardage to the total yardage required for the piece.
