Introduction
Second Life is a virtual world limited only by imagination. People represented by colorful avatars buy "land" there, build imaginary objects, mingle with others in the community, organize virtual events or join in commercial activities. Second Life allows you to assume another identity in a 3-D world teeming with possibilities.


Step One
Go to the Second Life home page to see if you want to join (see Resources below). Click "What Is Second Life" for general information and "Showcase" for sample objects people create within the site.

Step Two
Click the "Join" link in the upper-right corner or the big orange "Join Now" button at left to register.

Step Three
Begin the registration process. Make up a first name for your avatar, and then choose a last name from a set list in the drop-down box.

Step Four
Choose an avatar, the animated image that will represent you in the virtual world. Don't worry if it doesn't look quite the way you want; you will have a chance to alter the appearance later. For a tutorial on changing your avatar, check out the Second Life Knowledge Base (see Resources below).

Step Five
Fill out your real-life information, including name and email address, then create a password and a security question.

Step Six
Click the "Get Free Linden Dollars" button for a "free sample" of the virtual currency used in the imaginary world of Second Life. If you purchase "land" here, you will be charged rent in real money by the site owners.

Step Seven
Choose a membership level. The Basic Membership is free. Click "Skip This Step" to remain at the Basic level. Premium account options are displayed on the screen simultaneously and are available for a scaled monthly fee.

Step Eight
Click the "System Requirements" link and make sure your computer can run and sustain the Second Life download.

Step Nine
Choose Windows, Mac or Linux and download "Second Life Client."

Step Ten
Enter your virtual domain. There will be other avatars marked with their names wandering around. Click instant messaging to talk to one of them, or check the toolbar at the bottom for other options.
