Introduction
You've decided to take the plunge. You've bought a parcel of virtual "property" in the world of Second Life so you can take advantage of the many features offered only to Second Life land owners. What can you do with land to enhance your experience in Second Life? Plenty! Here's how.

Step One
Visit the Second Life home page to become a member. Join at the highest premium level to own land (see the Resources section below).

Step Two
Change from a lower to a higher level of Second Life membership via "Accounts" on your "Connect" page. This allows you to get the most out of Second Life.

Step Three
Purchase property. Use the tools under "Land" on your "Connect" page, and search for facts about how to collect L$ with the "Search" tool.

Step Four
Alter the terrain of your virtual property. Make it rougher, smoother, lower or higher using "Terraform" under the "Edit Terrain" tool.

Step Five
Build on your property with "prims." Basic ways to alter objects include pressing "Ctrl+Shift" to resize and "Ctrl" alone to rotate. Use click-and-drag to move objects. You can also type specific measurements, just like you would change the margins in a document.

Step Six
Learn beginning "prim" building from the knowledge base under "Tech Support" on your entrance page, or watch a tutorial (see Resources below).

Step Seven
Invite friends to your "house" for a party or event. Dance, play games, share music. Ask fellow members for other ideas.

Step Eight
Sell your land or acquire more. Get useful tips under "Land" in the knowledge base (see Resources below).

Overall Tips & Warnings

     Don't hesitate to ask questions of fellow members. Most are happy to help you figure out where you are, what you're doing and where the party is.
     The limit to the amount of land you may purchase using the virtual currency "Linden dollars" (L$) without paying a maintenance fee (in real money) is 512 square meters.
     You do all building with primitives, or "prims," basic geometric shapes that you can alter in any way you choose using a grid and measurement tools. It takes practice, but you can build skyscrapers, landscapes and even art objects out of these simple shapes.
     Occasionally land ownership can trigger disputes between members or among groups. Look in the "Tech Support" knowledge base for the rules and regulations of property ownership .
