What Sewing Machine Foot Do I Use?
Most of the newer machines produced after 1980, do take a snap-on presser foot but that doesn't mean you can't use all those wonderful vintage sewing machine attachments, just check before you purchase.
Snap-on: If the snap on the ankle can be removed by loosening the thumb screw, determine your shank size in the next step. If the snap-on ankle can't be removed, then you will only use Creative Feet and Wizard Feet for your machine.
With the presser foot in the down position, measure from the bed of the sewing machine to the center of the thumb screw
Low Shank will measure abour 1/2"
High Shank will measure about 1"
Slant Shank for Singer are designed only for Singer slant needle machines and will not fit on any others. This measures about 1". Some machines that are Slant Shank are Singer 301, 400, 401A, 403, 409, 417, 500, 501, 503, 503A, 600 class, 1200 class, 900 class, and many more. If unsure check your manual or a a sewing machine retailer.
So, ask yourself these questions:
Age of your machine? After 1980 most are snap-on. If it has a thumb screw then you can determine shank size.
