From the perspective of a person trying to find a hidden camera, there are three different types to be aware of: 1.2 GHz, 2.4 GHz, and wired cameras.
WIRED CAMERAS
The only easy way to find a wired camera is to find the device that is recording them, and follow the cable plugged into the input channel back to the device. Check VCR's, ipod type devices, and DVD recorders
1.2 GHz and 2.4 GHz
You can buy a 1.2G or 2.4G video receiver, which allows you to scan for them. Also, check items that are "pointed" at important places in the room, such as a bathroom, bed, couch, etc. If they have an extra power cable or 9v battery coming out of them, that's a dead giveaway. Hidden cameras are often hid in stuffed animals, clocks, air fresheners, etc. It's possible to buy spy cam hunters for about $400-500, which scan all commonly used frequencies and display the signal on the built-in LCD screen.
