HOW TO COOK WITH SOLAR ENERGY

Solar Cooking is easier than you think.  You just need a good quality solar oven like the SOS Sport, a couple of dark pans, and several hours of good sunshine.  Cooking times are approximate because the temperature in the oven can vary.  Here are some guidelines for cooking different types of food in the solar oven.

Cooked Cereals and Grains - Barley, Corn, Millet, Oats, Quinoa, Rice, Wheat:

Shallow pots work best.  You can choose from two methods:
1) Heat water and dry grain in separate pots in the solar oven.  When the grain is hot (it may burn brown) and the water is near boiling, add hot grain to the hot water.  Leave it in the solar oven until the grain fully absorbs the water.
2) Combine the grain and the water in the pot and let it cook itself.
I prefer method two,  it requires no monitoring.  I just put the cereal in the pot with the water and leave it for an hour or two.  When it is done I eat it.  How simple is that??

Vegetables

Don't add any water to  fresh vegetables, they have plenty of their own water.  Vegetables need a little more timing than cereals do.
Artichokes: 2½ hours
Asparagus: ½ to 1 hour
Peas, Lima Beans, Other Green Vegetables: 1 - 2 hours
Dried Beans (Presoaked over night):  3-5 hours
Beets, Carrots, Potatoes, Rutabagas, Turnips, Other Root Vegetables: 2½ to 4 hours
Cabbage, Eggplant, Bok Choy, Greens: 1 - 2 hours
Corn on the Cob: 1-2 hours
Onions, Bell Peppers, Leeks: 2 hours
Zucchini, Yellow Squash: 1 -1½ hours
Squash (Acorn, Butternut, Buttercup, etc.): 2 hours

Soups/Casseroles/Stews

Any crockpot recipe will work well for solar cooking.  Add water only if you are rehydrating grains.  For soups - cook meats, vegetables, seasonings, etc. in one pot, heat the water in a second pot.  When the water is hot and meat and vegetables are fully cooked, combine them.

Fruit (YUMMY)

Baked Apples:  1½ - 2 hours.  Don't add water.  Add cinnamon and other spices for flavor as desired.
Plantain: 1 - 1½.  Slice plantain and lay slices in the pot.  Add dots of butter for a fried flavor

Eggs

Cook eggs in their shells with no added water 1½  - 2 hours for yard yolks.

Meats

Don't add water or oil to meet.  Longer cooking means more tender meat and more browning.  If you are using BBQ sauce or other glazing, bake the meat for 1½ to 2 hours, drain fluids, add sauce and continue cooking.  Marinating meats also provides wonderful flavor in solar cooking.
Chicken:  2-3 hours cut up, 3-4 hours whole.  Longer to brown
Fish: 1-2 hours
Beef, Lamp, other Red Meats:  2 hours for small cuts, 3-6 hours for large pieces
