Jewelry is a popular commodity, and much of the jewelry we wear contains gemstones. For instance, almost every married woman has at least one diamond ring. Of course there are many other common examples of gemstone jewelry also. These may include pendants, brooches, earrings, bracelets and other kinds of finger rings.
New gemstone jewelry shines and glimmers. However, it becomes dull and dirty over time. Grease and different substances accumulate on the metal, stealing its luster. More importantly, the stones slowly cover with these same substances. You may not see it on the top of the stone (especially on a ring which gets washed on your hands frequently), but it builds up underneath the gem and in the setting. Without a clean bottom, light cannot penetrate the gem (this does not apply to opals). This prevents its true color and clarity from showing. While buying jewelry, I have seen some disgusting rings and other jewelry. Even when it is not obvious to the naked eye, I often see a lot of buildup through my jeweler's loupe.
The question is, "how does the average person clean this jewelry to recapture its original beauty?" Fortunately, I have developed a simple and successful method for this.
If you have several pieces of gemstone jewelry or want to get the best results from your cleaning, consider investing in a small ultrasonic cleaner. You can buy one for about $30 on Ebay. These cleaners hold the items in an inner tub filled with water or other liquid and emit ultrasonic frequencies to break apart the dirt. However, it is not absolutely necessary for this method.
You will need:
Ultrasonic Cleaner (or small tupperware container)
Vinegar
Water
Dish Soap Liquid
Soft-Bristle Toothbrush
1) First, place your items in the ultrasonic cleaner or tupperware container.
2) Fill with a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and hot tap water-enough to immerse the items. Let the items soak for 15 minutes.
3) Then, if you have an ultrasonic cleaner, set the timer for about 8 minutes and start. Otherwise let sit in the container an additional 10 minutes.
4) Afterwards, remove the items and clean one at a time. Simply dab a bit of soap on your toothbrush, wet with water, and brush around the gem/s gently. Be careful to not scar the metal or eject the gem/s. Make sure the bristles move in and around the setting/s. Alternate between brushing and rinsing so that you can see when the item is clean. Do this until you are satisfied with the result-2 to 4 minutes.
5) When complete, rinse off and pat dry with a clean, soft towel. If you have more than one item, proceed to the next piece and repeat steps 4 and 5.
