As the  techknowlogy expert here at SaferSeller, I know Computers can be complicated and even intimidating. When looking for a computer, sales persons can often try to get you to buy a computer loaded with things that you don't need and spend more money than your budget allows. Just as if you were buying a car, you need to have all your information and facts before you start listening to their sales pitch. Or better yet, read this and buy online! We also have information on Safe Trading Online here.

Some things you need to consider about a new computer:

  • What brand of computer?
  • What type of computer?
  • What type of processor?
  • How much storage space?
  • How much RAM?

Don't worry if these terms are new to you - I will explain these, so you are ready to make a decision on your own without the influence of a sales person.

The brand of your computer can make a huge difference on the quality of your computer. IBM, HP, and Dell to name a few, are great companies that make great desktops, laptops and tons of extras!

Do you need the portability of a laptop? Or can you suffice with the stationary desktop? Nowadays, laptops can be just as powerful as any desktop and don't carry the high price tag that they once did.

You are probably thinking "How do I know what kind of processor I need?". Well this is a pretty important factor. Intel and AMD make excellent processors. If you decide you need a laptop, Intel is your best bet. They have excellent performance for how much power they use. In a laptop you need long battery life and performance that suffer because of that. Desktops can be the ultimate in sheer power. AMD is great in this field. AMD offers many new advancements and are superb for gaming or video rendering of any kind. Both companies offer dual-core processors and 64-bit technology. If you are concerned about what to get here, don't worry. Dual-core processors are precisely that. Think of it as two actual processors in one chip. You can do so much more at once and get it done twice as fast. 64-bit processors can process 64 bits of information at one time compared to the standard 32 bits. This means again that your processor will be able to think through more information in less time.

Storage space refers to how large of a hard drive you require. What do you plan to store on your computer? If you need to just take care of business and don't do much else than documents in Word or Excel, then minimal hard drive space is necessary, say 30-40GB. Pictures can take up more space, so you should think about 40-60GB. Movies or videos can start to soak up more hard drive space than you would expect. If you plan to store whole movies or family video think about 60GB-100GB, but the larger the better.

RAM is probably the most influential component of your computer. It enables you to do more at one time. Basically the more the better. The minimum you should ever think about is 512MB. This is a pretty standard size that is great for the average user. However, if you plan to do a lot of multi-tasking, or plan to deal with large programs, go with up to 1GB (1GB = 1024MB).

In short, if you need a laptop or desktop with admirable performance for personal or business use, go with and Intel processor and at least 512MB of RAM. A powerhouse desktop should be powered by an equally powerful AMD processor and more than 512MB of RAM.
I hope this guide has helped to make your decision easier and less stressful as I know it could very well be.

Best Regards,

Bryan Roppoccio
