Choosing a car seat can be rather overwhelming, especially for new parents, who may feel unprepared to make a decision. Here are a few tips on how to choose a safe car seat:
- When you choose a car seat, look for one that is easy to install, and has some sort of locking mechanism that your child can not unfasten. Choose a seat that has a 5-point harness that your child can not unlock. The straps should not get twisted or jammed with ease. Also, make sure you check out the padding on the seat. You child is much more likely to fall asleep in a seat that is comfortable!
- Though car seats come in a range of styles & fabrics, most manufacturers still do not offer the range of fabrics that moms are looking for. Try looking for a trendy cover. These are great for cleaning, and you can change the look from boy to girl for subsequent children!
- LATCH was developed in response to the astonishing number of car seats that are incorrectly installed every day. The system is designed to be easier to use than traditional belt installation. The idea is that is will improve the number of correct installations & improve safety. If your car seat has two installation options, it's generally better to choose the LATCH option.
- There are a variety of car seats made from different manufacturers that may work for your child. The best choice is always the one that is best suited for your child's age, weight & height. The safest car seat is the one that is installed and used properly. Be sure to read the manufacturer's instructions carefully, and make a trip to your local police or fire department for a free confirmation that it's installed properly.
- Register your car seat! By filling out the manufacturer's warranty card, you will receive alerts from the manufacturer if the car seat has any problems in the future.
