As citizens of a society built on luxuries, we oftentimes make purchases that make us feel good, but the truth is these “products” require much work to keep up and care for. The most common “care” blunders are made with garments of fine cloth, such as wool and cashmere. Of course, the finest clothing companies label their sweaters and other “luxurious” garments as “Dry Clean Only.” These labels are only there to prevent liability. You see, dry cleaning is the easiest method for cleaning, so apparently, companies label their garments with these. The truth is, nearly all fine materials can be cleaned via a washing machine. Just follow these simple rules:
1. Woolite is Your Friend
The best cleaner I have found to be safe for my fine clothing is Woolite. It allows you to wash virtually every washable fabric, such as cotton, denim, silk, cashmere, and wool. It is safe on those fabrics you about which you worry.
2. Setting is Everything
When you place these garments into your washer, make sure that the setting is on “Delicate” or “Gentle Cycle.” Some washers even have a “Woolens” setting, which automatically uses cold water; however, do make sure that you use cold water, no matter what setting it is. It is imperative because warm/hot water may shrink the clothes, which will cause you much heartache, but will make your Barbie very happy.
3. It is all in the Drying
While it is wise to air-dry your garments by laying them flat on a hard, clean surface, I have found it quicker, yet just as safe, to dry these clothes on a “Delicates” setting. After all is said and done, your garments will look just as wonderful as they would if you had taken them to the cleaners.
