I have spent over 30 years in the bridal industry, in the theatre, & purchasing silk yardage by the bolt from Thailand....and will say from all this experience, that silk a natural product...so it should be treated naturally. It is so simple... >>What would you wash your hair with?
- A regular liquid soap meant for lingerie? NO !
- A hand soap (a complexion bar)? NO !
- A special liquid soap bought at a high-end department store...especially for fine lingerie? NO again!
Think of silk as you think of your hair. Because silk GROWS from an 'organic' body. Hopefully, you shampoo your hair with a very high-quality shampoo; one recommended by your hair-sylist. THIS is what silk should be washed with. And always...air dry it indoors without the sun directly on it.
I prefer NOT to dry-clean, because this process will remove the natural oils from the natural threads. There's a "Part 12" link for the entire history of silk that should be read by anyone embarking on the cleaning of silk. Most of it supports what I am saying here.
Even a preferred lingerie liquid soap would be better in my mind than dry-cleaning. That said, using a fine shampoo with a conditioning follow-up BY A HIGH-END MANUFACTURER, will produce the refreshing and lustre you want RETURNED to your silk fabric.
Most sincerely, Cherie Therese, Designer
