How to Build a Home Safety Kit

You probably have a small selection of items already ready, such as a flashlight, some food and water, and blankets, or you think that in an emergency situation you will be able to find them in a flash. That's not always the case. Organizing a home safety kit and keeping it in an easy to locate place can be the difference between life and death, a little dramatic I know, but it really will limit injuries suffered during a crisis, most while trying to find a flashlight or some blankets.

Keep your kit in a duffel bag or a suitcase so that it is easy to carry, and make sure you store it in a place that is easily accessible to the entire household. Be sure that every person in the house knows where the kit is located. It's also good to keep mini-flashlights in every main room in the house in case of power outages.

Basic items you will need to survive for 72 hours:

Water – at least two liters of water per person per day (Include small bottles that can be carried easily in case of an evacuation order)

Food that won’t spoil, such as canned food, energy bars and dried foods (remember to replace the food and water once a year)

  • Manual can opener
  • Flashlight and batteries
  • Candles and matches or lighter
  • Battery-powered or wind-up radio
  • Extra Batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Special items such as prescription medications, infant formula and equipment for people with disabilities
  • Extra keys for your car and house
  • Some cash in smaller bills, such as $10 bills (travelers cheques are also useful) and change for payphones
  • A copy of your contact information

Additional kit supplies

It is always a good idea to have extra supplies on hand. Here are some recommendations:

  • At least one change of clothing and footwear for each household member
  • Rainwear
  • Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each household member
  • A whistle (to attract attention)
  • Fire Extinguisher
  • Flares/Flare Gun
  • Garbage bags for personal sanitation
  • Toilet paper and other personal care supplies
  • Safety gloves
  • Basic tool kit containing: hammer, pliers, wrench, screwdrivers, fasteners, work gloves
  • Small fuel-driven stove and fuel
  • Two additional liters of water per person per day for cooking and cleaning
