For all of you parents, grandparents, day-care workers, and anyone else frequently changing diapers; one of the most common battles (and most difficult to keep from recurring) is DIAPER RASH! My experience and suggestions in this article come from having two children of my own (so close together I had two in diapers at the same time), and from working in the Emergency Department taking care of patients. Hope the following is helpful:
1. Try and avoid diapers that are made of "plastic" material on the outside, like Luvs and Pampers. This keeps air from being able to circulate which causes a constant moist environment. That is what, a large portion of the time, causes "diaper rash" or yeast. I had great luck with Huggies, they have a cloth-like covering.
2. If your baby has a rash that won't go away or seems to be getting worse, don't hesitate on asking your physician to look at it. This can be important in that you may be treating the rash incorrectly if it happens to be yeast instead of "diaper rash".
3. When trying to get rid of yeast especially, try and let your baby go around the house diaper-free as much as you can. This can be the biggest help!
4. Avoid long baths or soaking.
5. Avoid bubbles baths and soaps that contain perfumes.
6. Topical Ointments: If treating yeast, consult with your physician first. There are over-the-counter medications that can be suggested. For "diaper rash", I have always seen the best results with zinc based ointments. This really creates a protective barrier for baby's bottom against the things that cause irritation, ie. urine, stools, etc. (eBay item:5 Baby's Butt Aid Diaper Rash 40% Zinc Oxide Ointment (#400001606924). My favorite all time brand was Dr. Beaudreaux's Butt Paste. (eBay item:BUTT PASTE FOR CHAFED SKIN AND A DIAPER RASH OINTMENT (#150162945965).
7. Avoid things with isopropyl alcohol in it, like some wipes and washes. This just makes it HURT really bad!
8. Last, be sure to exfoliate/scrub gently, the rash area while giving a bath. Getting this area clean will make the biggest difference! I had multiple times that doing this alone would make the rash go away the next day. A regular wash cloth will work fine or something like this bath mit (eBay item:ECOBABY ORGANIC Sherpa Cotton Diaper Rash WASH MITT NEW (#120319027084).
Though there are a lot of things/factors that can contribute to diaper rash (like diarrhea from eating fruit) and of course the treatment or intervention can vary accordingly, I just touched on a few of the basic causes and treatments. As bad as I hated to see my baby's, and other's as well, cry and be so miserable from "diaper rash" I hope this helps some to fight the battle with as much information as possible.
