This is a list of 10 very important things to do in Baby Proofing a home - designed especially for when your baby is just learning to crawl or for when you just found out your new grandchild will be visiting for a few days.
- Protect all electrical outlets with outlet covers
- Install safety latches on all drawers and cabinets, especially those in the kitchen and bathroom
- Remove any hazardous cleaners and chemicals from low cabinets
- Remove all medicines to a locked area or up out of the reach of a child (just remember children learn to climb very quickly), and purchase all medicines with child lock caps
- Install baby safety gates at the top and bottom of all stairs and in the doorway of any area that you do not want the baby to enter
- Ensure all electrical cords are taped down and out of the main traffic areas
- Look at your floor and furniture from a child's view - remove anything small enough to be swallowed, remove anything that could be hazardous in any way, and keep hot drinks out of the child's reach.
- Anchor electronics and appliances (TVs, etc.) that could tip over (use duct tape if necessary)
- Vacuum or mop often to keep the floors clean
- Post the number of your local poison control center in a place you can find quickly or add the number to your cell phone. In spite of your best intentions, babies can find anything left on the floor and taste it faster than you would ever believe!
