Genesis Heat Set Paints non-toxic artist oils
Picture Perfect Application of Matte Varnish
Mixing:
Using odorless mineral spirits, thin the varnish, but not as thin as you would your paints. Just as every other detail involved in the reborn process, getting just the right look that you want, is a matter of preference, and will ultimately take getting a feel for it.
I prefer to use glass votive holders for mixing my paints, but you may use a porcelain pallete w/ wells, if you prefer.
Application:
Here's the trick, instead of applying the thinned varnish to your cosmetic wedge, use a larger, more coarse brush, to apply directly to your doll. Then, use your cosmetic wedge to "pounce" the varnish, to distribute it evenly.
When applied to the sponge, too much of the mixture is absorbed into it. Applying straight to the vinyl allows you to get much more use out of your jar.
Other Tips:
**Once matte varnish is permanently set with heat, it softens the contrast of paints beneath it. So, to get the same effect in contrast of blushing, mottling against fair baby skin tones, you'll want to create a little more contrast in these colors.
**You may repeat the application as needed, over parts that still show some shine from the vinyl. Heat set after each application.
**If your doll has a lot of shine, and requires several applications, you may have to choose either look or feel of realism, as the more applications, the less smooth the surface. This is a matter of personal preference. I personally prefer a more realistic "looking" baby, but some artists don't mind some shine, and prefer a smoother texture.
