This is one of the most common questions I am asked as a quilt block kit seller. How many blocks do I need for my bed quilt? So I have compiled some information to take the guess work out for you. The measurements are from common mattress top sizes used today. The number of blocks are to cover your mattress top only. You may add more blocks or borders for the drop (side) of your bed quilt. Not all mattresses are the same dimensions. But my chart will give you a really good idea of how many blocks you will need for these larger quilting projects. The size I will be talking about in this guide will be the DOUBLE or FULL quilt top.
DOUBLE or FULL size (52 x 74)
(Sew block to block) (Sew sashing in-between your blocks)
-
With 4" blocks you will need 234 blocks, with a layout of (13 x 18) Add sashing, you will need 140 blocks, with a layout of (10 x 14)
-
With 6" blocks you will need 96 blocks, with a layout of (8 x 12) Add sashing, you will need 70 blocks, with a layout of (7 x 10)
-
With 8" blocks you will need 54 blocks, with a layout of (6 x 9) Add sashing, you will need 35 blocks, with a layout of (5 x 7)
-
With 9" blocks you will need 40 blocks, with a layout of (5 x 8) Add sashing, you will need 24 blocks, with a layout of (4 x 6)
-
With 10" blocks you will need 35 blocks, with a layout of (5 x 7) Add sashing, you will need 24 blocks, with a layout of (4 x 6)
-
With 12" blocks you will need 24 blocks, with a layout of (4 x 6) Add sashing, you will need 15 blocks, with a layout of (3 x 5)
I am giving you a guide for sewing your blocks together with or without sashing strips. Remember your sashing go around all 4 sides of your blocks. They can be basic simple sashing or more complex. But a general rule is your sashing has a finished size of 1/4 the finished size of your block. You can still make your sashing a bit smaller or larger, these are just common guides.
