I have a lot of people come into our store asking to purchase a particular mouthpiece. They're not interrested in trying other mouthpieces, they just want to get the one their teacher told them. How does a teacher know what will be the BEST mouthpiece for their student? I can see if you live in a town where the music store only stocks a C* and a Dukoff, but if a local music store has a decent selection...put it to use!!!!
Mouthpiece Rule #1 - Do not ever buy a sax or mouthpiece you haven't played - I know, as an internet dealer, I'm shooting myself in the foot. I also have a new store, however, and enjoy watching a customer go through $200,000 in tenor saxes and 500 pro mouthpieces before he makes his choice. It's amazing to see someone come in and ask for a Meyer 6, but after he played through 100 or so mouthpieces, he found the Meyer was his 40th favorite! NOBODY can choose a mouthpiece for you. If you live way out in the sticks, and your local music store (aka guitar shop) only has 2 dusty old mouthpieces, the internet may be your best option. You'll need to go through a company who will allow you to try 5 mouthpieces at a time.
Mouthpeice rule #2 - Every mouthpiece is different...including the same model - It's absolutely amaing to see the HUGE difference of all the mouthpieces. I could line up 5 Vandoren A8 mouthpieces, and they're ALL play VERY different. The same rule applies to saxophones.
Hope you're able to drop by!
