When I first started to sell some of my New Orleans doubloon collection I did not give very much detail about the coin itself, what material it was made of, the size, color, weight, or any other terminology other than Mardi Gras doubloon. Not only did this hurt my sales, but prompted endless questions from potential buyers most who were familiar with regular US coinage.
So I started to do some research here in New Orleans and many Mardi Gras publications and coin collector books. The best way to describe Mardi Gras doubloon a virtally eliminate all questions is to describe them by gauge, which is thickness, diameter, the material and how it is made.
Typically 99% of all mardi gras doubloon are 15 gauge anodized aluminum (by far the most common), blue, gold, green, pink, orange, purple, red are also common tooco.. Fifteen gauge would be about 1/2 the size of a $1.00 coin as the gauge of the doubloon goes down, the thickness goes up. As far as Mardi Gras doubloons are concerned the thin ones start at 15 and go down to 8. Now 8 gauge would be almost the size of 2 $1.00 coins. Mardi Gras doubloons were minted in many other metals such as gold, silver, bronze, copper, antique bronze, bright bronze, pewter, and probably some other types of metal I can not think of at the moment. As far as the way the size is described it is all the same regardless of the material. Hundreds of people have asked me this questions over the years and this explanation usually clears it up. I hope it helps you as well.
HAPPY MARDI GRAS.
