When you are programming a new remote you need to follow the following directions step by step.

1. have each items ( i.e. VCR, TV, DVD player... ) code

2. with the device off, point the new remote towards it.

3. hit the correct button on the remote to select the particular device.

4. then using the remote's number pad, key in the device's code

5. now, hit the power button.

If the device turns on, your new remote is appropriately programmed.

Most product codes can be found via the manufacturer's web, or by looking it up thru Google.
