So your house looks like a pigsty and you don't know where to start in making it look presentable.  Well, my ideas are original, since I know there are plenty of organizing ideas out there.  But there are still messy houses. What does that mean? See how you do with my ideas: (First you have to remove the clutter).

                                  JUST MOVING IN
Play the "just moving in" game: Go to each room and pretend you are just moving in, and the room is completly empty. Look around at each thing in the room and think, "Would I move this in?"  You will see, without really moving, what things you wouldn't mind not taking, and thus be able to get rid of.

                               COULD IT BE REPLACED?
Need more than that game? Some people have a real hard time getting rid of things (pack rats), just think of this, when you go through your things: Could it be replaced if I dared to get rid of this? Personal items like photos, home videos, old letters, gifts from people special to you, first baby outfit, etc., could not be replaced, but anything you could buy again could be if you regret getting rid of it later, but it is more likely you won't bother to.

                            MY FAVORITE THINGS
Okay, you may be thinking that you really like one of your store-bought things, and of course, the needed store bought things like dishes and clothes can't be parted with (except if you have too many), So go through each room and say to yourself "Is  it one of my favorite things? Do I need it? Don't forget inside of cupboards.
Okay, what to do with the stuff you don't want...

                            THE YARD SALE CLOSET
Now what to do with all the stuff you can part with? Well, with less stuff, you should be free a closet now, and can convert it to your "yard sale closet" Put all the "going bye bye" stuff into it  and pick a Saturday  good for a yard sale. And while you're waiting, especially if it is Winter, till then, you can add to your closet, like if you upgrade something you have, or you get something you don't want, or something doesn't fit anymore.

                                      GOOD OLD EBAY

Of course, if you have something you don't want a yard sale price for, there is good old ebay. And if it doesn't sell you can always be kind and give it away as a gift.
Now your home should be clutter free. So it will take less time to pick up. Here we go:

ONLY BIG THINGS GO ON THE FLOOR!
You know how a bunch of little things all over the floor looks like a hurricane struck? Go to each room, and anything that is not made to be stored on the floor pick it up and put it on top of something that is! Like furniture, shelves, tables, beds, etc. If you run out of space off the floor, get some nice canvas duffel, book bags, or any other bags that are not disposable and put stuff into them and put them neatly against the wall.

                               I SEE THE FLOOR!
Wow, you see the floor, let's take care of that: Sweep the dirt and trash into the garbage. That was simple huh. But wait: sweep underneath everything! Lest mice can find food for themselves that you didn't want to provide.

                            NOW  JUST KEEP IT CLEAN
Dust your things that don't get anything on them, wash your things that do get something on them. Wash things you sleep on or wear. Spray Febreeze on your furniture. Put things back after you use them. Don't forget to wash fingerprints off your cupboards.
DA DA! Your house is presentable! With a clean house you probably won't get sick as often, it will make you feel better to look at it, you will know where stuff is, and you won't have stuff in the middle of the floor to trip and break your neck on!
I will even go beyond clean. now that it is clean, do you wish it was fabulous!? This is not needed but if you feel energized after all of this, buy some preety wall borders and dress up each room with different scenes; they come pre-pasted and are much faster than painting. Put down some new linoleum or throw rugs. Dress up your light switch covers with beautiful sculptured ones instead of the plain white ones. Put up glow in the dark stars on your child's bedroom ceiling. Buy a new glider for your living room. Paint a picture on your bed's  headboard.
So there, now cleaning your house won't take up so much of your time, and you will have gotten rid of things you don't really want or need. Now go sit in your nice soft chair and relax. But don't forget to keep it up so it will never look like a pigsty again!
