Due to the overwhelming demand for the directions on how to treat green ear, I have decided not to put the directions up on eBay for purchase but have decided to give the directions on how I treat it here for free. These directions are also the same as several sellers on ebay who are charging a fee. All I ask in return is if you find the article helpful, please take a moment to rate the article at the end and if you have any other questions or comments feel free to email me.
How To Treat Green Ear
(As with all vintage restoration, use & perform at your own risk)
Below is an account of how I personally have treated & currently treat my dolls for green ear. There are no guarantees this treatment will work on your dolls, but I personallyhave had 95 % success using this method. I do suggest you try the process on a “practice” doll, not your most prized beauty till you have become familiar with the process & technique!
Once a doll has contracted green ear you can never get rid of it TOTALLY only control & manage it. Even if you can not see it with the naked eye, it is still there. The degrees of controlling it depends on how sever it is. The outcome after treatment can range from not seeing it at all, to any shade of muted green.
I've read & tried many different ways to treat green ear, but prefer to use Tarnex & CLR (CLR stands for Calcium, Lime, Rust) as it works the best on the verdigris that is created when the brass metal breaks down. Both products can be found at your local Wal-Mart or Target. (DO NOT USE BOTH AT THE SAME TIME)
I have found that the following process to be effective on:
Barbie
Ponytail’s
Bubblecut’s
Swirl Ponytail’s
American Girl’s
Color Magic’s
Midge
Skooter
Neither treatment is effective on the MOD era dolls like TNT’s Casey, Francie, etc.
Tools Needed:
Tarnex (black & white bottle) or CLR (gray pour bottle ONLY)
Q-Tips
Make-up squares or cotton balls
Plain dental floss & sewing needle
Tweezers & small pair of needle nose pliers
Carefully remove the dolls earrings & remove head from the body. (This is a must as greening is also inside the head, not just on the outside). Remove any old verdigris that could have built up in the head (this could be little, to a lot) using the q-tip dipped with Tarnex or CLR, swab the inside of the head till Q-tip is clean. Take a needle threaded with plain dental floss dipped in Tarnex or CLR and run back and forth through the dolls ear holes till thread is clear, this helps to dissolve what's in the ear hole itself. Once this is done, take a small piece of cotton ball or cut make-up squares, found in the cosmetics department, they seem to be a bit easier to handle and not as messy as cotton balls. Cut into small swatches big enough to cover affected area and dip in Tarnex or CLR. Apply to the ear area like a patty, do both sides of head if green. Set the doll head on a towel and change the patties once - twice a day for several days and up to as long as a month, depending on level of greening. After a few days to a week, what's left is pretty much what your stuck with, as far staining is concerned, though some dolls will continue to clear further with a longer treatment. Most of the time this clears it so much it can't be seen. Once you have went through this whole process the final step is using either of the 2mm or 3mm nylon style earrings I & others sell. By using the nylon any green that may still be in the rubber/vinyl, that is not coming out and dissolving with the Tarnex or CLR will continue to leach into the nylon posts over time and after a period of time you can keep changing them as the green is drawn out into the nylon earring posts from ther dolls head.
Some people suggest putting the doll in limited sunlight, this has no effect on the proces & will create the situation of fading the dolls body and face color! NOT GOOD AT ALL!
Also be careful to limit getting Tarnex or CLR on the hair or makeup during this process. I have gotten CLR on both their face paint & hair accidentally and not side effects, but air on the side of caution . When I have I just washed it off with mild soap and water, but it is best to be careful and avoid their face paint if all possible.
.
After the doll has been treated, clean with mild soap and warm water, use safe pearl earrings or none at all and dress her up to the beauty she is and enjoy!
