This is to help identify a copied DVD from an Authentic DVD.
The first thing to notice is the bottom side of the disc. An authentic item is pressed leaving no burned marks and will be silver in color. A fake disc will most likely be purple or blue and there will be burned marks that stop somewhere on the disc.
Another dead giveaway is that on the bottom around the opening are mini UPC codes and identifying marks. On an authentic DVD you will see mini UPC bars with serial numbers that are put in place by the movie studios. Now one can not go to Best Buy and buy blank dvd's with these on them.
Also an authentic DVD will not have the words memorex or any other manufacturer printed on them.
Now let's look at the way the printing is made on the DVD.
On a copy it'll either be a sticker or it could be printed on there when using discs that allow an ink jet to print directly on them. In this case though you will always see the manufacturers name on the disc such as memorex. On an authentic DVD it'll be silk screened on and this is by running it through a silk screening operation and set up is very expensive and reserved for making tens of thousands of discs. If you think you have a copied DVD, try to spray any type of cleaner on the top printed side. On an authentic disc the image will stay. If it is printed by ink jet or a sticker, the image will bleed and smudge almost immediately
Also here's a tell tale way to see if it's a fake. Put it in your DVD-r drive and see if you can copy it. If you are able to copy it without any special software it's a fake. All Authentic DVD's come with copy protection on the disc and will not allow one to copy it without speical software. If you are able to add data to the disc or edit it in any way, you have a copy and not an authentic DVD.
Now I've read some guides here on ebay about spotting fakes. And honestly a lot of them are misleading.
Just because a dvd sells for 5 bucks does not make it a fake.
If the item comes with out the case, it does not make it a fake.
If an item ships from Malaysia it's probably 99.9% a fake.
This is something i thought i would write up real quick. I'll be adding information to this as i think of it. I hope this helps everyone out there.
