How To Spot A Fake Lilly Pulitzer Dress : eBay Guides

When I first started selling Lilly Pulitzer clothing on ebay, I couldn't believe that there was such a thing as a counterfeit Lilly. Well, in fact, there is! The purpose of this guide is to tell you what to look for so that you will be knowledgeable and get what you pay for.

To me, the most telling sign is the workmanship. Most Lilly dresses, though not all, are full lined and have Lilly hem lace.   There are usually small satin straps under the shoulder of sleeveless dresses to hold your bra in place and out of sight. The zippers work easily and are usually the YKK brand. If your seller does not list this information in the description, then write to them to ask if all these elements are present.

Where is your seller located? Be wary of purchasing Lilly from an overseas seller, particularly from China or the Philippines. While you may be getting authentic Lilly fabric, the dress may not be manufactured in a licensed Lilly factory. Generally, the product may look authentic but it will be missing such distinctive details as the signature Lilly buttons or the weight of the lining will not be comparable to an authentic Lilly dress. Dresses from the Philippines are generally sold new without tags (NWOT) so be wary if you see a large quantity of NWOT merchandise in the older prints.

If you bought your dress at retail, you would expect to pay between $160 and $220 for a new with tags (NWT) dress. If you find a bargain on ebay, ask yourself why. Most Lilly merchandise is from prior seasons so it is sold at a discount. But if the price is too good to be true, then it may be a fake.

Look at the labels. Lilly changed hers sometime around 1999-2000. Pre-2000, the Lilly Pulitzer name was followed by a TM.

After 2000, the TM was changed to a circled R.

If you find a print manufactured after 2000 with a label that has a TM, then you probably have found a fake.  In 2006, the label was changed once again and it was made much smaller.

In 2007, it was further changed to make it much smaller.  A good way to authenticate your dress is to take it to a Lilly Signature Store. Find a knowledgeable sales person who will give you their opinion.

The best way to protect yourself is to buy from a reputable seller. Check a seller's feedback to make sure they have not received negative comments related to selling counterfeit goods. Many sellers have return policies which allow you to return merchandise in its original condition for any reason within a specified time frame. If in doubt, don't buy it.
