How To Make Your Home Environmentally Safe For Your Cat

Like humans, cats require oxygen, water, and food to survive.  It is important to make the air your cats (and you!) breathe and the water and food they drink as safe and clean as possible.

Our cats' lungs are like our own.  If  there are pollutants in the air it will compromise your cat's respiratory system.  If possible, don't use hairspray at all. If you have to, use a non-aerosol hairspray.  When spraying hairspray, make sure to use it in a room not occupied by your cat.  Your best choice, is to get a hairstyle that requires no hairspray.

Always keep fresh vegetation growing in your home.  Plants make oxygen and also clean the air.  However, before introducing a plant into your home make sure you do reseach to confirm the plant is not toxic to your cat.  There are many, many plants that are poisonous to cats.  Of the plants that are safe are cat grassesCat grass is safe and edible.  Cats love it because it aids their digestion and we love it because it adds a nice touch to our home decor.  You can also plant Nepeta Cataria, which is a fancy name for catnip.  It is one of the easiest herbs to grow from seed.  It provides a euphoric treat for cats and even serves as a mild sedative for humans (the leaves taste great in tea!).

When choosing a candle, make sure it has a lead-free wick.  If the candle maker does not specifically state it is made with a lead-free wick I would choose not to buy it.  We don't want lead released into our home.  Choose candles with a lead-free wick and candles made naturally from soy.  When putting out the flame of  your candle, simply bend the wick down into its own melted wax.  The flame will go out without releasing smoke into the air.  Your lungs and your cat's lungs will thank you.

Also, when cleaning your home use all natural cleaning products instead of commercial cleaning products.  Commercial cleaning products are bad for us and bad for out cats.  For example, if you clean your carpets with a commercial chemical your cat will walk on the floor and absorb the chemicals into its paws.  Your cat will also track the chemicals from the floor to your lap and to your bed.  There are so many "recipes" for natural cleaning products.  First, it's easy just to use an all natural soap and water for most cleaning jobs.  If you have stubborn stains, you can use a wide variety of natural items around your home.  For example, for grease stains you can use a lemon.  And, another one I found, which surprised me, was a natural cure for a clogged drain.  Pour one cup of salt into the drain followed by a cup of baking soda.  Then pour a kettle of boiling water on top for a bubbling reaction that should break up any clog.  If possible, don't run the drain for several hours so the bubbling action has time to work.

When we choose to use all natural products, we all benefit.  You save your cat, yourself, your money...and our Earth.

All living creatures will thank you.

I will continue to post more environmentally friendly ideas in my guides.  If you have any suggestions or feedback, please email me.
