To make your hemp earrings you will need the following supplies.

Hemp twine

Hemp thread

Beads

Scissors

Earring hooks

Tip before you start cutting your string.

It's important to have extra long knotting cords because their length gets used up tying the knots and if they are not long enough your whole project gets scrapped. It's much easier to cut off extra length when you are done than to start over from scratch so make sure to give yourself enough length. When in doubt go with longer strings. I have learnt this lesson the hard way more than once. If this is your first time tying hemp earrings cut your cords even longer than is normal. When I am trying something new I always make my cords extra long just to be sure.

To make the hemp earrings we will need to cut the hemp. First you will cut 2 pieces of hemp twine about one foot long.

After cutting your hemp twine take the hemp thread and cut ten pieces one foot long.

Take one of the hemp twines and five of the hemp strings and pull them halfway through the earring hook. Take the remaining hemp twine and hemp strings and pull them halfway through the other hemp earring hook. On both earrings tie off the strings and twine with an overhand knot.

How to tie a macrame over hand knot.

Hold all the strings together make a loop, pull the strings through the loop and pull tight.

Now we are ready to start the macrame portion of the hemp earrings. For this you will need to learn how to tie a macrame half knot and a macrame square knot. The macrame knots will be made using the thicker longer hemp twine. This is called your knotting cords.

Making a half knot.

Take knotting cord one and go over the center strings and under knotting cord two. Next take knotting cord two under the center strings and then up and over knotting cord one. Pull bother knotting cords tight to finish your half knot. To create a macrame spiral pattern design. You need to tie a series of macrame half knots.

Making a square knot.

A square knot is made by first tying a half knot. After your half knot is made you need to take knotting cord two and go over the center strings and under knotting cord one. Next take knotting cord one under the center strings and then up over knotting cord two. Pull bother knotting cords tight and you are finished your macrame square knot. The macrame flat pattern design is made using square knots.

To make the macrame portion of the hemp earring you will use either the flat pattern design or the spiral pattern design depending on your design preference. The macrame portion should be approximately one inch long. Finish off the macrame portion with an over hand knot. You can now cut off any remaining length of your knotting cords.

Instructions on how to make the beaded tassels.

Take the center strings. Place a bead upon the string and tie a half knot one inch from the end of the earring. Cut off any remaining length after the over hand knot. Repeat with each of the center strings.

Your hemp earrings are now finished. I hope you found this tutorial helpful and informative. Some of the skills you learnt in this tutorial will help you make other hemp jewelry such as hemp necklaces, chokers, bracelets and anklets.
