Would you like a different format than the usual family tree? I have come up with a different idea: Take a recipe box filled with blank index cards and dividers and use one card for each person in your family tree. On the card include a little picture on the right, and then their name, birthdate, birthplace, number of children etc. on the left. On each divider,  write the last names,  dividing the cards accordingly, putting them in the section with their last name. I use a family tree software that automatically inserts the information into individual rectangles. You could also use software that has business card templates and you could insert a picture and type the information in for a perfessional look. Then paste them on each card. Now I can just go right to the person I want to look up by looking at the last name on the dividers. I just pull out the person's card. My family and friends feel more singled out having their own individual card!
