In this guide, you will learn how to make your own boxes to store all that ribbon. Ribbon is a necessary embellishment for card making and scrabooking, but it is one of my most difficult items to store. These boxes are designed to keep your ribbon easily organized and easy to access. This ribbon box works great for storing all the ribbons on the round holders, but it can also work if you have a long loose piece of ribbon.

The basic idea is to cut slits into a box so that your ribbon can come out!

You will need the following supplies/tools: box cutter or exacto knife, plain or decorated shoebox, ruler/straight edge, and a pencil.

I recommend decorating your box how you want it before you start measuring or cutting or else you will cut, then decorate, and CUT AGAIN.

1. Use your straight edge to draw dotted lines on to the front side of your shoebox (the front side is which ever side you want your ribbon showing through. Make sure that your lines are long enough for your ribbon to glide through. The length of the lines depends on the thickness of the ribbon you have. Some of the lines on my boxes are longer to accomodate thick ribbons and some are tiny for thinner ribbons. Your line should look something like this:

Close together, with a little space in between

2. Repeat step 1 until you have drawn many parallel rows of dotted lines. Your box should now look something like this:

3. Once you have the lines where you want them, CAREFULLY use your exacto knife or box cutter to make a cut through the box where all the lines are. You may need to hold your straight edge as a guide for your cuts. Make sure to cut all the way through to the inside of the box.

4. The next step is treading your ribbon through the slots. I use a paperclip.Stick the paper clip through the slot. Next, thread the ribbon into the paper clip. Once the ribbon is threaded, pull the paper clip through the slot; the ribbon comes through the slot too! Line up your little wheels of ribbon inside your shoebox so they will unwind easily, like shown below:

This simple ribbon box will keep your ribbons organized and easy to use! Plus, you can decorate the box any way you want so that it will match your work space. In the stores, I have seen ribbon storage containers that are $20 and up, but for free you can make your own! With all your ribbon organized, you might just find that you have room for more ribbon.

I hope that you found this idea helpful. If you did, please vote YES!!

Feel free to send me a message with any questions.

Happy crafting,
