This guide will help you to install a new bulb in film, slide, opaque, transparency projectors. This information is also valid for medical, dental, microscope and nearly anything that will use a projector bulb, with the exception of video projectors and projection head lamps for cars.
Installing a projector bulb can be very easy and will make a difference in the life span of your bulb. A new bulb can be a big expense, so lets install the bulb correctly and get the most life possible.
1 : Unplug the projector. Open the projector lamp house to gain access to the old bulb. Never throw away the old bulb until you have a new working bulb installed. You may need the old bulb to verify the type with your bulb supplier.
2 : Dust or clean off the socket area and make sure it is free of any debris.
3 : Wear a pair of light clean gloves or get a paper towel to handle the new bulb. Open the new bulb box and inspect the new bulb. Gently clean the new bulb with a lint free cloth, use alcohol to be sure the bulb is completely clean. Allow the bulb to dry.
4 : Examine the socket and its workings and press, twist or lock the new bulb in depending on socket type. You must do this without touching the bulb with your bare hands. Any amount of bodily/skin oil will cause problems very soon.
5 : Insure the bulb is completely in the socket. Insure the bulb and projector are at room temperature before testing.
6 : Close the lamp housing and place the projector on a sturdy surface.
7 : When and only when the lamp and projector are at room temperature test the projector lamp by turning it on.
8. When a projector lamp is hot and off or hot and on, NEVER move the projector or JAR it in any way! This will usually cause early filament failure.
9 : Enjoy your projector and if all is well then you can throw out the old bulb.
