1. On a cold, windy day, turn off the furnace, shut all doors and windows, and turn on all fans that blow air to the outside (stove vents, bathroom fans, for instance) This will depressurize your home.
2. Light an incense stick and hold it next to common air leak locations (see tips on this page for a list of these locations).
3. If the smoke travels horizontally, you have found an air leak where you'll need to caulk, seal, or weatherstrip.
4. Pay particular attention to air leaks at doors, windows, and places where plumbing, ducting, or electrical wiring penetrates through exterior walls, floors, ceilings, and soffits over cabinets.
5. For a more accurate measurement of air leakage, hire a technician to conduct a blower door test in your home.
