How To Determine Your Microsoft Xbox Version

Follow this guide to determine your Xbox version. Determining your version will help you find the parts you need. The video chip (near where AV cable goes in) on the motherboard determines the version along with the power supply connector type and if there is a fan one the smaller heatsink and memory chip (left of smaller heatsink). There are three brands of video chips (Conexant, Focus, and Xcalibur). There are two brand of memory chips (Samsung and Hynix).

Thanks and I hope this helps. This guide is best viewed at 1024x768 resolution. Last Updated 7/1/06

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Does your Xbox have a fan on the smaller heatsink? (Conexant video chip).

You have version 1.0

Does your Xbox have a Conexant video chip and the smaller heatsink does not have a fan? What type of power supply connector? Single row of pins or double row of pins?

Single row is version 1.1

Double row is versions 1.2-1.3

Virtually no difference between 1.2 and 1.3.

Does your Xbox have a Focus video chip?

You have version 1.4-1.5.

Virtually no difference between 1.4 and 1.5.

Does your Xbox have an Xcaliber video chip? If so what type of memory? Samsung or Hynix?

Samsung is version 1.6

Hynix is version 1.6b

Other ways to check what version you have

    - By the serial number on the bottom of your Xbox. This method is not as accurate. If your serial number is rubbed off or has already been opened then you need to open your Xbox to find the version.

      2002 - 12 - 18 :MFG. DATE

YYYY - MM - DD (Year - Month - Day)

Looks like this: 3052945 25105 :SERIAL NO.

The format for the serial number is LNNNNNN YWWFF

L = number of production line within the factory

NNNNNN = number of the Xbox within this week

Y = last digit of the production year

WW = number of the week of the production year

FF = the code of the factory (02: Mexico, 03: Hungary, 05: China, and 06: Taiwan)

If the factory code is 03: Hungary, then you have version 1.0.

If the factory code is 02: Mexico, then check the MFG. Date, November 2002 and later is version 1.1. Otherwise it is a version 1.0

If the factory code is 05: China, then you have atleast a version 1.1. (My example above is atleast a Version 1.1)

If the factory code is 06: Taiwan, then you have atleast a version 1.3.

Halo Special Edition translucent green is version 1.2

Crystal Special Edition translucent white is either version 1.5 or version 1.6.

Again, you may need to open your Xbox to know for sure what version you have as this method is more complicated and not 100% exact.

Additional Information

    - All Xbox DVD Drives work in any version Xbox.

    - Motherboards versions 1.0 through 1.5 will not work in versions 1.6 or 1.6b cases.

    - Motherboards version 1.6 and 1.6b will not work in versions 1.0 through 1.5 cases.
