It is the system BIOS that generates most of the error messages during the booting process. These messages are by and large similar to each other. This discusses the most common Boot-time error messages, why they occur and how to deal with this problem.

Use boot floppy :

Insert a boot floppy disk into your floppy drive and attempt to boot your laptop. Go to the BIOS setup and set the Boot priority to A:\ drive. Select ?Start without CDROM support'. This will bring you to the A: prompt. Now type in dir C:\ and press Enter. This will enable the hard drive to automatically run the config.sys and autoexec.bat files, which are needed for the proper loading of your Operating system.

CMOS Date and Time not Set:

When the system is unable to detect the date and time stored in the CMOS memory, it is possible that there is a corruption of the CMOS memory. To avoid this, set the date and time at the BIOS setup. Also, recheck and save all the other settings before you exit from the BIOS setup page. Reboot your system once more to ensure that the problem does not exist anymore.

HDD Controller Failure:

The IDE hard drive controller is a separate I/O card that is plugged into the motherboard. You need to verify if the controller is able to detect the hard drive or not. You can do this by going to the BIOS setup program and using the IDE detection facility to check the parameters of the drive. If the controller is unable to detect the drive, it implies a hardware problem.

CMOS Battery Failure:

All the settings that you specified in the BIOS setup program are stored in the CMOS memory. CMOS memory has its own battery power. That is what enables the memory to retain all the settings, even after you turn off your laptop. You will need to replace the CMOS battery if your BIOS cannot hold your date and time settings.
