Collecting Hasbro's Sleeper Hit "Xevoz"
Hasbro is one of the biggest toy companies out there. Famous brands include Star Wars, G.I. Joe, Transformers, My Little Pony, PlaySkool, and many more. While most people are familiar with these famous brands, Hasbro has produced many other toy lines that weren't mainstream hits, leading to a untimely cancellation. However, some have developed a core and loyal following. One such toy figure line is Xevoz. Fans continue to hunt for these discontinued figures in discounts bins and outlet stores like searching for buried treasure. On eBay prices for rare figures easily reach $70 or more, well above the original price of $7.99. Even the less rare figures continue to be snatched up for making "kit bashed" custom figures of anything from Spider Man to Optimus Prime. This article will explore what makes Xevoz fans so fanatical, and I hope after seeing one for yourself you will also be a fan.
What is Xevoz?
I guess the closest comparison would be Lego's Bionicle line or Stikfas. Action figures that you assemble and then can disassemble by hand to make your own creations. This the key attraction. With the ability to take parts from one figure and swap it with another figure without special equipment, your imagination and creativity is allowed to run free.
The key difference being that while the afore mentioned toy lines are very abstract looking, Xevoz figures are very detailed looking works of art. Xevoz figures also range in theme from science fiction, super heros, giant animals, horror, all the way to fantasy. Thanks to the ability to easily customize figures you can create even more themes as well. Xevoz often comes with theme appropiate accessories such as a cape for a super hero, along with "gag" items like pumpkin head for tomb wraith.
For example, Alpha Ranger is a sci-fi commando. With all the accessories and articulation, you can customize Alpha Ranger in many different poses. If you're a fan of science fiction themed toys, Alpha Ranger definitely fits into your army of the future collection.
Another example from the horror theme is FrankenPunker, a Zombie Punker. With multiple arms and heads you can create your typical Anne Rice Frankenstein or Rocking Punker with an attitude.
Starting Your Collection
Though Hasbro has stopped producing these figures you can still find some figures on clearance at Toys R Us or KayBee, but these figures are disappearing fast as existing fans look to create more customs and new fans get addicted. Some online stores still carry some of the more common figures. The best place to find them however is eBay, especially the ultra hard to find figures. The common figures are often available used or "new in box", meaning unopened. The best way to start your collection is to buy them is in lots. As you can often get a bunch of figures at a discount and save on shipping. Though you may get duplicates when you buy this way, when you start customizing figures you won't mind the extra parts. Buying from eBay saves you gas and time from searching stores, especially when the more rare figures are practically impossible to find at this point.
The "Moby Dick" Figures
Just like Captain Ahab, you may spend your whole life searching for these figures. Every toy line has these, Xevoz is no exception. However with eBay you won't have to spend your life. Just be prepared to pay a premium. These are the rarest and most sought after figures. I'll list them here starting with the rare going up to the most rare and sought after.
Crypt Curse- an Egyptian Mummy. The detail on this figure is impressive, making it one of the best depictations of a mummy in toy form. Not to mention the ability to customize it. Its only draw back was a poorly designed action feature hampering articulation. Expect to pay at least $20 for a NIB(New In Box, Mint In Box is also another common term).
Cyro Katana vs. Preda Crawler 2pack- this set combines the best elements of science fiction and fantasty with a monster with a body and weapons made of ice fighting a multi-limbed cyborg from the future. This is set is getting increasingly rare as most people are unwilling to part with it new in box or used. Expect to pay at least $40 NIB.
Tomb Wraith - a skeleton made out of ebony black possessing magical weapons. Though nearly as rare as "Storm Wing" this figure fluctuates in value as most parts are available from much more common and inexpensive kits. However there are some unique piecies, such as a flaming sword, and purists tend to push the price to $50 NIB on average.
Storm Wing- the rarest and most popular Xevoz figure. This figure was difficult to find in stores when released as it was short packed. For every 8 figures in a case only one was a Storm Wing. Combined with the special wings it has that can be combined with any figure, this is the rarest and most popular Xevoz figure. Don't be surprised if the bids get pushed as high as $75 or more.
As for other popular figures, bids can reach as high as $20 for NIB figures such as Shield Breaker and Quickslinger. However most figures on average go for much less, $3-$4 because of how common they are. So other then figures I listed above, don't go crazy bidding for them. Wait until someone puts up lot of figures for sale at low starting bid prices. Good luck collecting! You can see what's up on currently up on eBay by clicking Search eBay for Xevoz
