Buying a tennis racquet can be a very daunting task.  There are so many companies and all have a wide variety of frames from which to choose.  My hope is that this guide will make it a little easier.

There are three major categories:  Power or Game Improving Racquets, Tweener Racquets and Control or Player’s Racquets.

Power or Game Improving Racquets are power oriented racquets.  Many of these racquets have oversize to super oversize head, approximately 107 – 135 square inches and are light weight 8 – 9.5 oz.  Weight wise they are either head heavy or evenly balanced so they retain enough weight in the hitting zone.  They are designed for players looking for more power from the racquet who have shorter, slower swings.

These are some of the Game Improving Racquets:  Head Metallix 10 which is Head’s most powerful racquet.  Head size 124 sq in,  Prince 03 Speedport Gold Racquets, a solid choice for beginner to intermediate player, headsize is 115 sq in, Prince 03 Speedport Silver, a great racquet for players anywhere from 2.0 to 4.0.  It gives some added pop to your shots.  Headsize is 118 sq in.  The Prince Hybrid Hornet is another excellent choice.  It comes in a mid or oversize frame and your eye hand coordination is the determining factor on which to choose here.

Tweener Racquets are a sort of combination of features between the Game Improving Racquets and Players Racquets.  The weight on these can be anywhere between 9.5 – 11 oz.  The balance can be anywhere between slightly head light to slightly head heavy.  The head size is usually mid-plus 95 – 102 sq in.  These racquets offer low-medium to medium-high power.  Their appeal is to intermediate to advanced players.

These are some of the ‘Tweener Racquets:  Dunlop Aerogel 500, this is a spin friendly racquet and very comfortable.  Head size is 100sq in, Prince 03 Speedport Red, also very spin friendly, comfortable and easy to maneuver.  This racquet appeals to players from 3.0 – 5.5.  Head size is 105 sq in  Other racquets in this category would also be the Prince 03 Speedport Blue or White.

 Control or Players Racquets.  These racquets would be used by professionals, college players or high level club players.  They are heavier in weigh 11.5 – 13+ oz., and have smaller heads,  85 – 98 sq in.  They are for players who provide their own power and are looking for more control.

Some of these racquets include:  Prince 03 Speedport Tour, headsize 97 sq in, Head Flexpoint Prestige.  It is available in the Mid, Midplus and MIdplus XL.

You will need to decide which head size you want.  Larger provides more power all things considered equal plus a bigger sweet spot providing forgiveness on miss hits.  In general a smaller head appeals to the better players looking for more control and larger heads appeal to beginners to intermediates looking for the bigger sweetspot.
