After you have completed your beautiful quilt, how much fabric do you need for the binding, or for the back? What is the formula? Well here are a couple of formulas you won't be able to live without.

But first , lets talk about the fabric.  Make sure the fabric you choose for the back of the quilt is worthy of being on your quilt. After all, you spent hours working on the front, you don't want to short change the quilt by using sub-standard fabric on the back. Make it interesting, make it either blend with the front or totally differnt so you can turn it over and have two different quilts !Now , here are some measurments for fabric : 

    twin size  63" x 86"  quilt: 5 1/4 yds. and 3/4 yds for binding .

     double    78" x 87"   quilt :  5 1/4 yds.   and 3/4 yds for binding

      queen     84" x 92"   quilt:   7 1/2 yds   and 7/8 yds for binding

       king       100" x 92"  quilt:  8 yds      and 1 yd.  for binding  ( all binding is 2  1/2 " ) 

Here are some formulas to remember for bindings:

  Classic Straight-Grain Binding--cut 1  1/2" to finish 1/4" to 3/8" wide. Most quiltmakers prefer less than finish size of 3/4".

 To make a bit wider follow this formula:  Make the strips 2 x the desired width plus 3/4". EX. Finish size 1/2" =  Cut 1 3/4"

 2x1/2"+ 3/4"= 1 3/4"

Double fold binding strips = 4 x the desired finish width + 3/4".

EX. Finish size 1/2" = 4 x 1/2" + 3/4" = 2 3/4".
