How Long is EXTRA LONG? 

That is the "Million Dollar Question"!

BACKGROUND -A feedback I recenly received inspired me to write this guide concerning XLONG neckties.  The feedback said, "the ties were not extra long, i compared them to my other extra long ties." Thankfully this EBayer left me a positive feedback :) However, by this EBayer's feedback, I could tell that his concept of an EXTRA LONG tie was different than mine and the rest of the Ebay Seller Community! Why the descrepency? First of all neckties vary in length. Through the years, Era to Era, there has been a big fluctuation in not only length but width as well! The 40's - 70's ties could average 54" - 56" this tells me that either men were short in those days, they liked wearing ties that sat above their "belly buttons", or they used a different knotting style as to conserve on tie length! Please Note: There may be another senario but I will leave that to my "Vintage Buffs" to clue me in! If you find VINTAGE EXTRA LONG ties, they were more than likely custom made by "MOM", or someone's personal seamstress/tailor!  Occasionally I list these and they "Go Out the Door" really fast! So if you find a VINTAGE XLONG listing on EBay, you might want to jump in on the bidding!     

DESIGNER MISCONCEPTION-  Not all designers have an, "XLONG" label!  My son and I have had the painstaking pleasure of examining thousands of ties! What do we look for? Designer, Fabric, Pattern, Era, Condition and Length! How do we know what is XLONG if the tie doesn't have an "XLONG" label??? We went to the EBay marketplace resaerch to see what lengths other sellers were calling Extra Long!  We found quite a range 60" - 72" (I am sure there are longer ties but this is the range we found).  So you can understand why this gentleman saw that there was a descripency when he compared the ties he won from me to the ties at home!! Just like Dress Shirt collars vary in size so do neckties.  One note for the "Jerry Garcia" fans...this same applys. Not all of the long "Garcia" ties have "XLONG" labels!

HOPE- Dont be concerned as there is "light at the end of the tunnel" for you BIG and TALL gentleman. Designers are more savvy on their customer's needs and are producing more extra long ties. Beautiful woven silk ties by designers such as XMI, ROBERT TALBOTT, FERRELL REED, ZEGNA, FACONNABLE and even BILL BLASS (yea I went there...BILL BLASS makes some GREAT ties too! ) that are so popular today, are on the average 60" this is 2" more than the 56"-58" tie average of past eras.... So you might want to try keywording "woven silk" and see what lengths come up in the sellers description! 

RESOLUTION- How to resolve this conflict "How Long Is Extra Long"? First of all know your needs.  Get out the old tape measure and measure your extra long ties at home!  If your tie is 60",61",62" or 68" long key in the word 60", 61", etc or check the ties dimensions in your seller's listing description. A good seller should always include the length of the tie in their listing :)  If you are looking for a "XLONG necktie LOT" you will need to look at the sellers listing range.  To save time most sellers will take the shortest and longest tie and list the lengths as a range.  This means if it is a lot of 3 or 4 ties, the first number in the measurement is the shortest and the last number is the longest..The other ties in the lot are between the range!
