I have a teenage daughter and a 2 year old son that share a room. My daughter wanted a BLACK and WHITE room. She wants it to be 50's style. I needed to come up with something that could work for both kids without leaning towards one or the other too much. Here is what I came up with:
START BY PAINTING THE ROOM A LIGHT GRAY. Gray is boring, right? Not the way I did it. I took a bottle of irridescent glitter and for every few feet I painted, I would pour a bit of glitter in my hand and softly blow it onto different areas of the wet paint. It gave it a wet look with a little sparkle, but not too much. If you blow too hard and get a giant glitter spot, just roll over it once with the paint roller and you are good to go.
NEXT, I painted the trim a bright TURQUOISE BLUE.
I bought some CHALKBOARD PAINT, had them mix it into a DARK GRAY color, and using a template that I made out of an E-Bay shipping box (sorry!), I painted GIANT CIRCLES on different areas of the walls. I also painted half the wall under my daughters loft bed with the CHALKBOARD PAINT for my son. This is now his play area. I have his crib under there as well, which I pull out at night just in case the bed breaks. (you never know)
THEN, I took an old CD and used that to create smaller circles in TURQUOISE BLUE, which I blew some bright blue glitter onto.
I also painted a few big BLUE circles on the ceiling.
I took some old CD's, attached some giant CRYSTALS, hung a black chain onto it, and hung them from the ceiling.
I took some VINTAGE LONG BEADED necklaces and hung them around her ceiling light fixture
I also painted her old DRESSER with the chalkboard paint, and added BLUE and LIGHT GRAY CIRCLES
My mom bought ZEBRA PRINT bedding for my daughter and some sheer white and zebra curtains.
MY DAUGHTER LOVES IT. She can personalize her messages on the CHALKBOARD circles, write phone numbers, reminders to herself, or whatnot on them.
My son gets to write all over his wall, and since it is under the loft, it doesn't make the room look like its a disaster and messy.
