How I Discovered My Own Style
How do you find your own style? I have been through many styles. I have even wondered if I should forget about having style. It is sometimes a wonder how we think we need one. It is still true. I think it is what we need the most. We need style.
I am going to try to make this as easy for you as possible. Why is it so easy for some people to keep the same style all their life? I think that some people are made that way. There are those of us that have to keep looking. For many years I had collected so many things and then one day I thought I should REALLY find my style since I had too much and it was troubling me. YES! I like life simple. We hang onto the style of someone we love. We pattern our style after some old song or movie or book. I love 1940's Hollywood, but it lasts about 2-3 hours and I am lost again!
OK, so what did I do? I am going to take you back. I am going to tell you how I found my style. I fought with it for years too. I was trying to make everyone happy. You don't want to be nuts! Ready?
I will send you way back to when you were young. What was it that you were captivated by? Was it a piece of furniture? Was it a flower in the spring or summer? You know. Do you have a color that always comforts you? You can have more than one. Just keep them seperate or use by my advise just three colors together. We want to keep the colors important. Your style is not a painting.
Is it the price that always makes it more winning to you? Maybe it is and you never knew that. Is it the way you can handle the items? There is always something that you never get tired of now. You just can't part with it. You put it away and it comes back to you. You have to do something with it again. It is what you see in someone else's home or the store you go in to see.
More often than not- your style began with a place that you really loved. Maybe it was your earlier home, your relative's home or your dream home. We all have to make a style our very own. You will bring it home and make it special.
When you start to find your styles of material, furniture, colors, patterns, function, care- you will be busy and happy! Your goal will be to learn more and find all you can to make the style complete. JUST RIGHT!!
Here are some learning tools- magazines and stores and antique stores and flee markets. Take a walk in nature and find a design in nature that is what you need. Is it the water fall or is it the fresh calm waters? Is it the squirrel or the big bad bear? Do you like the clouds or the sunset?
My grandparents had a chair that I liked. Their life was simple and neat! I went and did all of the above for years. YES, money does play a part and you need time to know what you can live in peace with. Don't fight the dragon forever. My style is---COUNTRY.
