A new puppy in the house is always exciting and fun. In order for the puppy to be integrated into our households, it is important to complete the housebreaking process as quickly as possible. There are several methods for housebreaking a new puppy. Crate training, a popular method of housebreaking, involves the use of a crate or cage. Puppies do not like to eliminate in their beds for obvious reasons. While confined, most puppies will control their bladder and bowels for a longer period of time than expected. During housebreaking, whenever the puppy cannot be watched, the puppy is placed in the crate. Just before putting the puppy in the crate, take the puppy outside. The first thing you do when you take the puppy out of the crate is another trip outside. The puppy should be under supervision while not in the crate. The puppy should be crated overnight. Your puppy will quickly develop outside bathroom habits.
The biggest mistake is having a crate too large. The crate should have just enough floor space for the puppy to lie down. If the crate is too large, the puppy will go to one corner of the cage and urinate or defecate. Some larger crates and cages are available with dividers. Additional advantages of crate training are puppies will see these crate as places of security often retreating to them when company or other stressful events occur.
