There are so many choices for the average family. Everything from crossovers, hulking SUV's, wagons ( A dying breed in the US) and of course minivans are all available for family use. I have a family that consist of my wife, myself, and twin daughters. While my kids were infants, I had a Nissan Pathfinder. The vehicle was very reliable, but limited in interior space and could never break 18mpg on the highway. I also had a 93' Subaru Legacy wagon. This was an excellent car with commendable fuel economy, reliability, and AWD. However, after almost 180k mileage it was time to sell.

Enter the Honda Odyssey. I have driven minivans many times before for work trips, etc. I have always enjoyed the ride, space, and visibility. My wife needed convincing. I feel that it is difficult for women in general to accept the minivan as a primary vehicle. I think it identifies them as a mom and not  as a woman. (SUV  ads almost always appeal to this stereotype by highlighting the vehicles capabilities over rough terrain, picturesque scenery compared to the day to day practicality of a minivan).

After some initial hesitation, my wife drove the Honda. This vehicle provided excellent power, great highway mileage(24-28mpg), and could fit all the stuff twin infant daughters requires (double strollers, car seats, toys, etc). It also serves as a adaptable platform for the Home Depot or IKEA run. IN 7 years the vehicle has returned 115k trouble free miles, averaging 20 -26 mpg, and carting everything under the sun. Now here is the kicker, it really is a joy to drive.  Typical Honda steering tracks amazing well, extremely powerful and efficient engine, and excellent ergonomics. My inlaws have purchases a 2007 Odyssey and it raises the bar in terms of power, convenience, and efficiency.

Now some pointers. My odyssey is the 2000 model year. Stay away from automatic side doors  from the 2000-2002 model years. (occasional electric problems). My van has manual doors, which I prefer.  IT came with a 210hp (3.5 liter engine). The 2001 came with a 240hp (3.5 engine), but had problems with the transmission. The 2006-2007 model is completely redesigned. It has cylinder deactivation for better fuel economy and is generally better than my version.

The Chrysler minivans have always had appealing designs but have deplorable transmissions and low resale value. The new Hyundai and Kia minivans are very close to the specs of the Odyssey and have been proven to be competent minivans. The Toyota is a close match to Honda, but in my opinion too over priced. The Nissan van is unique and had a major redesign this past year. (another viable option). The Ford Windstar had numerous problems with transmissions. GM's minivans were relatively reliable but seem second tier to the Honda, Toyota, Hyundai/Kia offerings.

Thank you for reading my two cents.
