You know how expensive fly sprays for horses can be, and most of them only keep the flys off for a few hours if even that, I have come up with some homemade fly sprays that can save you money, and really work!!!
NOTE: Before I begin, Alot of these sprays ask for Citronella Oil, please BEWARE, DO NOT use the type of Citronella Oil that is used for lighting lamps and such, this is not what you want and could harm you horse, use the type of Citronella Oil that comes from distilled lemon grass.
NOTE: Some of these oils I am listing can cause photosensitivity on horses, especially on light skinnned horses. Always do a patch test on your horse to make sure they do not end up with a reaction to the product, if they do, there are other homemade sprays listed that do not include these oils.
NOTE: Do not spray in or to close to horse's eyes, this can cause irration, do not spray on a pregnant mare's udders, as this can cause irration to the nursing foal.
I will now list different products you can use and mix for your homemade fly spray, and then I will list different recipes you can try.
List of products:
Avon Skin So Soft (the oil)
Mineral Oil
White Vinegar
Lemon or regular dish soap
Lemon juice
Baby oil
Some of the oils you can use are, Citronella, Lemon Citronella, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Sandalwood, Tea Tree.
Make sure all recipes are mixed with water, do not use any product without diluting it.

P.S. Alot of these sprays can also be used on dogs or people, but again do a patch test to make sure you or your dog are not sensitive to any of the ingredients.
P.S.S. Another handy item to have is a bounce dryer sheet, it repels insects, you can put one on your bridle or saddle to keep insects away on a trail ride, keep one in your pocket to keep the insects away from you to!!!
