A recent trend for card companies is to take autographs from an index card or check (although it could be from any signed item) and make it into a baseball card. These "cut signature" cards have been very popular. Especially considering it's the only way to obtain an autographed card of many deceased players. Some sellers to take advantage of this have been taking printed autographs and making their own auto cut cards. I recently contacted a bidder who paid over 200 dollars for a Ted Williams/Babe Ruth facsimile cut autograph. When I informed him that the autographs were printed and the meaning of the word facsimile he wrote back stating he didnt believe me. He thought facsimile meant that the autographs were real just that the card they were placed on wasn't an official autograph card. When i showed him examples of other homeade cut auto cards of deceased popular HOF's with Buy it now options for a five to ten dollars he finally believed that he was swindled. I have seen several buyers bid large sums on these homemade cut autograph cards. Remember people facsimile is just a fancy word for a printed, fake autograph. Many of which may look good, but are simply printed autographs on a piece of paper then inserted into a card. This seller and others I have messaged all thought they were getting a deal of a lifetime. They actually knew the true value of a real autograph. People want to try so hard to believe something is real that they seem to throw all logic out the window. A Ruth cut auto alone sells for thousands, how can a buyer realisticaly think that the listing just somehow escaped the thousands upon thousands of collectors on ebay every hour. Remember if its too good to be true it probably is. The fact is so many people use ebay that real authenticated autographs will sell for their market value.
