After working as a homecare social worker for the elderly, I observed dedicated and loving caregivers giving compassionate care to the patient.  However, more caregivers than not, had the serious problem of not receiving time for themselves, and this really concerned me.  I soon became an advocate for not only the patient, but the caregivers!  I always emphasized to the caregivers how important it was to find respite in some form or fashion, and to save something for themselves.  A burned-out person cannot be an effective caregiver.

A year ago, I found myself in the position of being primary caregiver for my elderly mother.  After bringing her to my home to live, I took my own advice and sought something interesting that I could become involved with.   Fortunately for us all, mother is still independent for several hours on and off during the day.  I now use these hours for myself.  After spending enjoyable time researching and preparing, I launched my eBay Store in September 2005.

Finding resources for my business was just a click or two away.  I learned that the USPS website had a page for ordering shipping supplies, and not only were the supplies free, they were delivered to my front door!   My other valuable discovery was that I could print out postage-paid shipping labels for all packages paid through Paypal.  Again, by scheduling a pick-up day and time on the USPS website, my ready-to-mail packages were picked up at my front door by the a postal employee.   As a bonus, the buyer is given an email heads-up from USPS that a traceable shipment is coming their way!  All other supplies can be ordered online (eBay or other) and delivered to my home, as well.

Oh, of course, I also realized that I needed time away from home, and we have a surrogate caregiver twice a week to stay with mother.  I use these days to kick back, and to do my buying.  This time is valuable for mother too.   She needs and enjoys spending time with someone else.  She also gets a kick out of seeing what I buy, and I always find something special for her on each trip out!

Your situation may not be exactly like mine, but you may also be homebound much of the time.   If you have been considering whether or not it would be feasible to start an eBay hobby or business from home, I hope this guide will be of benefit to you.
