Benefits of home theater
Have you bought a new plasma TV lately? Or a progressive-scan DVD player? Either way, if you’re listening to TV and movies through those tiny speakers built into the TV, you’re only getting half of the home theater experience.
Home theater is all about surround sound and the way that your audio system interacts with your TV and DVD player to create a realistic cinema environment. A surround sound system separates the audio from your favorite movies and TV shows into several different signals, each sent to a separate speaker.
A typical system has one speaker positioned directly above the TV, another two on either side of the TV, two more behind the viewer, and a separate subwoofer to really get things shaking. More advanced systems add another speaker directly behind the viewer or a pair of speakers to each side. The viewer is literally engulfed in sound—from gut-shaking explosions to arrows whistling past your head, you’ll feel just like you’re at the local multiplex.

If you’re shopping for your first surround sound system, you’re in luck. There are more choices available today than ever before—from prepackaged all-in-one systems to custom component systems, the right solution for your needs is out there. But how do you choose the right one?
