Glass is known to be around for at least 5000 years. The core form method was used in the earlier years. It was a molten string of glass was wrapped around a clay body which assembled the shape of a vessel. Once the entire object was coated with glass it was cooled, it took more than 12 hours. The clay was chipped out then a glass bottle was made. The blow pipe was invented around first century B.C. It was a long hollow metal rod the tip of it was put into molten glass. The glass tip was blowed into the rod then the mold was turned into several forms.

The recipe of sand wool and ash would result in a greenish colored glass. They then tried different substances to get more array of colors. ( mostly metallic oxides).

When reading lots of different books, different people believe that Jamestown in virginia made thier first try in 1608 to make glass. It is just something to note that the main purpose of the glass house was not to supply the early americans with bottles, window glass or drinking vessells , it was intended to be shipped back to England, where there were know forest left to fuel the glass house furnaces and to supply the glass for the mixture. They do not believe that any glass was made in Jamestown.

In 1739 the first sucessful American glasshouse was started in New Jershey by Caspar Wistar who had came from Germany.

1763-1774 Henry William Stiegel was the next glasshouse to come along.

1783 Pitkin glassworks of East Harford Conn. first to produce Historical Flasks, window glass and "clock glasses"(glass covering clocks face) They were very sucessful until it closed somewhere near 1830 due to the cost of wood for fuel.

In the 19th century bottle molds were becoming more wide spread, ribbed type molds were more common.

The first molded figured flasks were probaly made in Connecticut aroung 1815 and in the 20th century the inevntion of the automatic bottle making machine which marked the end of the of the hand blown bottle.

It is always fun to learn somthing new if you are a collector in this area like me. Keep an eye out for more guides on bottle in the next couple of weeks. I am collector on medicine, Soda, Decanters, Perfume etc and my husband does alot of digging .
